AU History: Since time immemorial, the Fanalis have been a tribe of mighty warriors and hunters from the edge of the civilized world. When the fall of mankind happened, the only thing that happened was they grew stronger. From that point on, all Fanalis born were Gods of War, able to take on a hundred normal humans in battle.
Unfortunately, there were never very many Fanalis, and there were now human enlightened as well. Vastly outnumbered, the Fanalis clan was chipped away to nothing. Now the vast majority of them have been enslaved.
Skip ahead to a bit before the present day. Morgiana, age five, was taken from her parents and made into a servitor for the city of Gigas. At a young age, she had little of the supernatural strength her people were known for, and was in an ideal situation for being trained into a role of what was essentially a glorified slave. Her new owner and mast, a young noble named Jamil, saw to it that Morgiana believed that even the idea of running away or disobeying him was impossible. He abused and overpowered her throughout most of her life, keeping her completely under his thumb.
Jamil put on a friendly facade, but it only went skin deep. He abused all his servitors recklessly, but with the powerful fighters he had under his command (Morgiana included), none were brave enough to raise any kind of official complaint. So she whiled away several miserable years of abuse, until one day Jamil got it in his head that he was going to capture a particularly powerful pokemon that lived in some crumbling ruins a few miles beyond the edge of the territory Gigas firmly controlled. He grabbed his two strongest servitor bodyguards, Morgiana and a huge mute brute by the name of Goltas and set off to conquer it.
It might have actually worked, had a young man by the name of Alibaba not interfered. In the end, they did find the pokemon they were looking for (An Alakazam), but did not capture him. The ruins it used as its home were collapsed by Alibaba and Jamil fighting. In the last moments before they were all crushed, Goltas spoke for the first time since Morgiana had met him. He shattered the chains around her ankles and told her that with Jamil's death, she should never again call another master. As Goltas dragged Jamil further into the collapsing ruins, the Alakazam used its strange powers to rescue Morgiana and Alibaba.
The next thing she knew, she was lying in the grass on the outskirts of Union. Her shackles lay shattered at her feet, and the city gates were within viewing distance.
Canon Personality: Morgiana is quiet to the point of seeming withdrawn and usually fairly formal and distant in demeanour. She stands rigidly, speaks rarely, and is usually the kind of person who just fades into the background. It's not hard to forget she's even there sometimes. But don't let that fool you into thinking that she's cold hearted. Morgiana keeps a tight lid on her emotions because it was the only way to survive as a slave. Losing yourself to fear or despair accomplished nothing, so she held it at bay by being totally impassive to everything.
Being an ex-slave, Morgiana has very strong feelings about anyone trying to get her to do anything she's not okay with. She has displayed her most impressive feats of strength resisting others trying to control her. She's still getting used to being free, though. Her first instinct is to defer to what other people want. She usually does remember that her own opinions and intentions matter, but it usually takes her a little while to build up to that.
She has little patience for men being stupid. Her friends have a bad habit sometimes of trying to shut themselves away from people and shoulder ridiculous burdens by themselves. You know, like shonen anime protagonists tend to do. In every instance, she has put up with this for approximately no time at all, almost immediately resorting to kidnapping and threats of violence to encourage everyone to act like adults. She has shown similar levels of irritation from catching her friends acting like perverts.
The big thing Morgiana wants out of life is to have friends who feel like they can rely on her. She wants to help, and will shoulder any task and overcome any obstacle to do so. I'd love to say this doesn't make her a bit of a pushover in certain situations, but, to be honest it does. It would not be terribly hard for an unscrupulous person who had none the less become her friend to get her to do more than her share of work.
AU Deviation: This Morigana is not a slave, she is a servitor. It amounts to basically the same thing, but the people of Gigas with the exception of Jamil are not quite so cartoonishly evil about owning people. As such, she has a bit more pride to her bearing. She was essentially property of another person, yes, but she was prestigious and valuable property. It's not much, but when it's all you got, you cling to it all the tighter.
Because her status wasn't QUITE so dirt low, she has mixed feelings about her old home, and doesn't want to talk about it, at least until she's had time to make up her own mind about it.
Canon Abilities: Morgiana is a Fanalis. That makes her far stronger than normal humans physically, but weaker spiritually.
- She can shatter stone with punches or kicks with little difficulty
- She can jump dozens of feet into the air
- She is skilled at unarmed combat.
- She can "see" by echolocation if she needs to
- She can shout in ultrasonic frequencies that tends to unnerve anything that hears it, especially those with sensitive hearing.
Despite her lack of magoi (Magical power), she does have a few magical tricks, in the form of her Household Vessel (made from the shackles that once bound her), which allows her to borrow Alibaba's fire magic. She just has to be careful about overusing these powers or risk injuring herself.
- The chains wrapped around her bracers can be controlled directly, allowing her to swing around like Spider-Man
- She can wrap the chains in fire for added attack power
- With training, she eventually learned to contain the fire very very carefully, allowing her to create wings of flames that let her fly without wasting much magoi.
Enlightened Abilities: Fighting/Fire God of War. She is similar to her OU counterpart in terms of physical abilities:
- She can shatter stone with punches or kicks with little difficulty
- She can jump dozens of feet into the air
- She can "see" by echolocation if she needs to
- She can shout in ultrasonic frequencies that tends to unnerve anything that hears it, especially those with sensitive hearing.
She has no household vessel, but with training and general character development, will learn to use fire magic even so. Since it won't be focused around a household vessel, it'll be a little different.
- She will learn to generate chains made of fire. They won't do much for binding or holding things, so she won't be able to swing around on these, but they will still burn stuff.
- Eventually she WILL learn to fly, again in a similar way to her OU counterpart, with giant wings of flame extending from her ankles. When she masters this ability, she will also gain the flying type.
Starter Pokémon: None
Notes/Special Considerations: I would like the Fanalis to be part of this setting, as a tribe of fighting typed enlightened who are very rare and mostly enslaved. As a parallel to the canon Fanalis's low levels of Magoi, BNW Fanalis have low levels of empathy with pokemon. They rarely make good trainers.
SAMPLES
First-Person: From a call me out post. As it is technically only 9 comments, I've tacked on answers to a few of the sample questions to the end of this app to make up for it. I hope this is okay.
Third-Person: Morgiana hefted a sack of potatoes onto her shoulders. After a moments thought, she lifted four more and set off for the kitchen to start peeling. It wasn't glamorous work, for sure, but it was important that SOMEONE get all this done, so she was happy to do it herself.
Her load precariously balanced on her shoulders, Morgiana left the storage shed on floor 32 of the agricultural tower, and walked straight into the driving wind and rain. She didn't mind the cold, though. She was here because she CHOSE to be here, not because someone had told her to. She stopped for a moment, feeling more aware of the world than she had been in waking memory. The rain felt good. Even the mud oozing between her toes felt good.
After a minute or so she shook her head and returned to the present; There were a lot of hungry farmers who wanted their dinners. She set off at a trot to the kitchens. The head chef beamed when he saw her with the huge mountain of potatoes. Anyone else would have taken three or four trips, but of course a Fanalis could do it easily in one. Then his gaze dropped down to her feet, which were still caked with muck, leaving a path of muddy footprints from her to the door.
One thorough ear blistering about the importance of a clean kitchen later, Morgiana was scrubbing the floor with a mop and feeling rather foolish. She smiled slightly, though. Once upon a time, people would have either been too afraid of a Fanalis to yell at one, or have been to contemptuous at a slave to not throw in some kicks or whips to go along with the yelling. Here, no one cared. Even if she occasionally made a mistake, she still had new friends who relied on her.
Yes. This was a good place.
-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
Honesty, openness, and the ability to cooperate with others.
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
Any lengths. Even if it cost me my life.
-What strengths make you most qualified for your role within Union?
Fanalis fight because no one alive can match us in battle. Whether against other humans, or hunting pokemon, war is our purpose.
-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
As his last words, Goltas told me that no chain could ever bind me again. It is my duty to his memory to remember those words and make sure they are true.
REAPP ADDITION
When Morgiana was dropped, she decided she was going to go on a journey to find other Fanalis, learn more about her people, and learn to control her powers as an enlightened. She met one or two other Fanalis on her journeys, but they were as ignorant about their past as she was. Some of them were also slaves/servitors, and the hell she raised getting them free usually made local news. On the controlling her fire powers front, she made some progress. Using the fire for more than a few seconds at a time still tires her out, but she can at least control it well enough to not accidentally burn down bushes.
During her journeys, she met a young man named Sinbad. Despite a bad first impression involving Sinbad having all his clothes stolen, they eventually ended up as travelling companions. When she heard about Union's latest troubles, she declared that she was going to return home (For her few months in Union had made it feel more like a home than her many years in Gigas.) and urged Sinbad to come with him to help. Sinbad agreed.
